Wildlife Removal in San Jose: Skunks, Raccoons & Bay Area Wildlife

San Jose sits at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, flanked by the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west and the Diablo Range to the east. California Fish and Game Code prohibits bat exclusion from April 1 through August 31 — a five-month window that's longer than any other state. If you discover bats in your home in spring or summer, you're waiting until September for full exclusion. This is not a technicality — it's a strict legal requirement that applies to all bat species in California.

What can be done during the exclusion window: we can seal gaps that lead to living spaces (preventing bats from entering occupied areas) and schedule full exclusion for September. Planning ahead matters. If you suspect bat activity, schedule an inspection in late winter or early spring so we can assess the situation and plan accordingly.

Skunks are the most frequent wildlife complaint in the South Bay, and San Jose's housing stock explains why. The city has a significant proportion of older homes with raised foundations, accessible crawl spaces, and deck gaps that skunks find irresistible. They den under structures, dig for grubs in irrigated lawns (leaving characteristic cone-shaped holes), and spray when threatened or cornered.

Skunk removal requires a different approach than most wildlife removal. Trapping must be done carefully to minimize spray risk, and the den site must be excluded after removal to prevent new skunks from moving in. A skunk that has been denning under a deck for a season has left scent markers that will attract other skunks for years if the entry point isn't properly sealed.

California's mild climate means raccoons breed year-round in San Jose — unlike northern states where breeding is seasonal. There's no predictable safe window for exclusion without first assessing whether young are present. Every removal starts with an assessment.

Coyote Creek, Los Gatos Creek, and the Guadalupe River support large raccoon populations that range freely into adjacent neighborhoods. Homes near these corridors face higher wildlife pressure than those in more isolated areas.

California ground squirrels are a significant pest in San Jose's hillside neighborhoods and properties bordering open space. Unlike tree squirrels, they burrow extensively — undermining foundations, retaining walls, and landscaping. A single ground squirrel colony can have dozens of burrow entrances across a property.
