Wildlife Removal in Los Angeles: Coyotes, Roof Rats & Canyon Wildlife

Los Angeles has one of the most complex urban-wildland interfaces of any city in the United States. The Santa Monica Mountains, Griffith Park, the Verdugo Hills, and the Puente Hills all push directly into residential neighborhoods, creating wildlife corridors that funnel animals from wild habitat into backyards, garages, and attics on a daily basis. The P-22 mountain lion famously lived for years in Griffith Park surrounded by freeways — if a mountain lion can navigate LA's urban matrix, so can everything else.

Roof rats (Rattus rattus) are the most common structural pest in Los Angeles, and the problem has intensified significantly over the past decade. Unlike Norway rats, which burrow at ground level, roof rats are agile climbers that nest in attics, wall voids, and the canopy of fruit trees. They enter homes through rooflines, gaps around utility penetrations, and gaps in tile roofs — which are standard construction throughout LA.

The city's abundance of citrus, avocado, and fig trees provides year-round food, and the mild climate supports continuous breeding. A single pair of roof rats can produce 40+ offspring per year. Once established in an attic, they gnaw through wiring, contaminate insulation with droppings and urine, and create entry points that other animals later exploit.

LA raccoons are large, well-fed, and remarkably bold. They're particularly common in canyon-adjacent neighborhoods — Laurel Canyon, Beachwood Canyon, Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Topanga — where the urban-wildland interface is sharpest. They raid unsecured garbage, den in attics and crawl spaces, and have learned to navigate the city's green corridors with impressive efficiency.

California's mild climate means raccoons breed year-round in LA, unlike northern states where breeding is seasonal. There is no "safe" time of year to ignore raccoon activity.

Virginia opossums are abundant throughout LA County. They're particularly common in neighborhoods with mature landscaping, fruit trees, and accessible crawl spaces. Opossums are generally non-aggressive but carry fleas, ticks, and occasionally leptospirosis. They den under homes, in crawl spaces, and in overgrown areas.

Several bat species are common in LA, including the Mexican free-tailed bat and the big brown bat. California has the longest bat maternity season restriction of any state — exclusion is prohibited April 1 through August 31. If you discover bats in your home in summer, you'll need to wait until September for full exclusion. We can seal gaps leading to living spaces in the interim.

Southern Pacific rattlesnakes are found throughout the Santa Monica Mountains and range into residential neighborhoods in Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Topanga, and the Hollywood Hills. Western diamondback rattlesnakes are found in the drier eastern and northern parts of the county. Encounters in yards and garages are common in canyon-adjacent neighborhoods, particularly in spring and after rain.

Tile roofs are standard throughout LA and create dozens of entry gaps that don't exist on asphalt-shingle roofs. Ridge caps, eave ends, and penetrations all require inspection and sealing.

Drought stress on trees creates dead branches and weakened wood that wildlife exploits. Years of drought followed by wet winters also drives unusual wildlife movement patterns.
